Building Power with our Union

Before we had a faculty union, UNM’s Administration would grant smaller faculty raises than were intended by the legislature. Since we unionized, every member has received at least the full raise specified by the legislature, sometimes even more.

That is the union difference!

2019

  • UNM faculty organize a super majority that vote to unionize forming the two bargaining units of UA-UNM (Unit 1, continuing faculty & Unit 2, temporary part-time faculty).

2021

  • UA-UNM ratifies our first Collective Bargaining Agreement.

2022

  • Compensation becomes contractually enforceable & negotiated yearly. 7% raise secured for Unit 1 & Unit 2.

2023

  • 6% raise secured for Unit 1 & 8% for Unit 2.
  • Clear governance process established starting the process of making Faculty Handbook Policies made contractual in our CBA.
  • Contractually enforceable grievance procedure established.
  • Promotion & tenure process contractually enforceable in our CBA.
  • 4/4 teaching load established for Taos & Gallup branch campuses.
  • Leave policies clarified & expanded including Parental Leave where both parents now have at least one semester leave.
  • Year-long Term-Teacher contracts established for eligible adjuncts.
  • Office of Academic Personnel establishes an annual Faculty Salary Progress Report to keep the public updated on their efforts to increase faculty salaries.

2024

  • 20% raise to minimum salaries secured for all bargaining unit Members.
  • 3.5% raise secured for Unit 1 and 4% for Unit 2 Office of Academic
  • Personnel agrees to publish a report by college of all salaries adjusted for merit, equity and retention Negotiations begin for our second CBA.

2025

  • 4% raise secured for bargaining members with summer contracts.
  • 5% raise for Unit 2. UA-UNM secured one week of paid work added to the beginning of each semester on all Unit 2 contracts adding an additional 6.25% to all Unit 2 pay rates (in addition to the 5% increase in base pay).
  • 10% or more pay for Term-Teachers (above the minimum rates for Adjunct instructors). Class cancellation policy established for Unit 2 members.
