Fall is shaping up to be a busy season for UA-UNM. Read on for ways to get involved on campus, in our community, and at the Roundhouse.
General Membership Meeting
Thank you for coming out, UA-UNM. We had over 50 members in attendance at the Fall 2026 General Membership Meeting, where we reviewed our healthcare campaign, contract gains, leadership structure, and finances, and talked about how to turn member concerns into collective power. Even though it’s a hard time to ask for more, your Union needs every member to take one more step, such as joining, recruiting a colleague, becoming a steward, or joining a committee, so the work is shared and our Union can win even more.

Join the International Legal Defense Fund Committee
We’re seeking one dues-paying member to join the International Legal Defense Fund Committee (ILDFC). The ILDFC reviews requests for emergency financial assistance from members facing immigration proceedings that threaten their ability to live and work in the U.S.
We especially welcome members who are international workers or have experienced U.S. immigration procedures. If you are interested in serving, please contact VPABQ1@uaunm.org by October 31st.
Deb Haaland Canvassing Event
October 24, Albuquerque, NM
Join Labor members from across the state as we launch an early vote canvass and phone bank for our union’s endorsed candidate for governor, Deb Haaland! No experience necessary — come and make calls to other labor union homes or knock on labor union doors and share important information about labor-endorsed candidates with other union members. Doors open at 10am and the canvass/phone banks launch at 10:45am. Deb Haaland will be on hand to greet volunteers and kick off the day’s activities. Hosted at AFT NM union hall: 530 Jefferson Street NE, ABQ, NM 87108.
Write to your legislators
As we get closer to the 2027 legislative session, legislators need to hear from real people sharing real stories about the cost of healthcare. Higher Education Labor United in New Mexico (HELU-NM), a coalition of higher education unions, is fighting alongside us for an 80/20 health insurance match.
Here’s how to take action:
- Start with our template letter.
- Make it your own. Add your experience, such as a bill you struggled to pay, a treatment you delayed, or a difficult financial choice you had to make. Personal stories are what legislators remember.
- Find your legislators. Look them up and get their email addresses at the NM Legislature’s Find My Legislator page.
- Send your letter.
