Dear UA-UNM Colleagues,
As we continue the 4th week of the semester, we are grateful for our community and the turnout at the Labor Day Weekend rally. UA-UNM joined over 6,000 working class Burqueños on September 1st at Civic Plaza in downtown Albuquerque to make clear that it’s workers, not billionaires, that make New Mexico run!
As you know, your faculty union represents faculty from across UNM’s five campuses, and we plan to continue fighting for the improvement of our working conditions. Join your union today and/or encourage your colleagues to join by clicking on the following link: https://connect.aft.org/app/memberforms/06662/join
We are also revitalizing our Steward Program and are seeking strong leaders like you to help strengthen our workplace community. Stewards play a crucial role in supporting colleagues and keeping communication open between members and leadership.
Responsibilities will include:
- Attend twice-yearly organizing training meetings, the first of which will be Saturday, September 13 at 1:30pm at the AFT office at 530 Jefferson St and on Zoom.
- Participate in a monthly stewards meeting (3-4 per semester)
- Gaining familiarity with our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
- Stay connected and be the first point of union communication with approximately 20 colleagues
We would be honored if you considered joining the Steward team. If you are interested or wish to learn more, please fill out this form. If you have conflicts with the meeting times above, but still want to serve, know that we will work to accommodate you!
Your UA-UNM Bargaining Team met with UNM Administration on Friday, September 5 to continue negotiating our Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) for our permanent and temporary faculty. We have reached a tentative agreement with the Administration on our Unit 1 Leaves Article, which now includes a provision that allows our members to use sick leave not only for themselves, but also to care for an ill or injured family member. We’ve also codified the language that ensures that if both parents are bargaining unit members, they are each eligible for up to one semester of parental leave with full pay. We are still waiting to hear from the Administration on several issues yet to be resolved, including Workload, Academic Freedom, Unit 2 Appointments, and many others.
Our next Bargaining Session is today (Wednesday, September 10) from 4:00-6:00pm on the Albuquerque Campus in CTLB Room 110. You and your colleagues are vital to this process and your presence is important. Please RSVP to join us and wear your union t-shirt/button/stickers!
